| * smiles a lot now. Only once did I hear what would count as a laugh.
* is an avid shopper already. We have learned which stores are "feeding friendly" rather quickly.
* usually falls asleep in the car, pretty quickly. Unless someone is back there to entertain.
* doesn't seem to mind her dirty diapers, but she loves having her diaper changed. (this is much different from the first two weeks in which she would scream bloody murder!) I wish the changing table were safe enough to leave her there, she is always happy and cooing when laying on it.
* sleeps in her bassinet, in our bedroom. Sometimes for 6-7 hours at night. Not usually though. ; (
* tucks her thumbs under her index fingers.
* likes to sit out on your legs, not cradled against you. There's a lot to see now!
* holds her head up really well. She has been practicing that since day one at the hospital.
* hates sleeping on her back. She has been able to turn her head since two weeks so I've allowed her to sleep on her tummy for the last few.
* sleeps through noise. Right now she's in her swing and the gardener is weed-eating outside the window. She attended the Super Bowl party and slept through it, screams and all! Doorbells, blender, talking... its all good!
* likes her swing. She tolerates her bouncer.
* loves to stand up now. If you try to burp her against your shoulder, she will try to "walk up" your stomach.
* gets lots of attention from her "aunties" and a few "uncles". She loves them all, and only one makes her cry. ;0)
* still looks a lot like her daddy!
btw- I will not hold it against you if you do not wish to view our videos - however, she does smile in the 8 week one! I realize at this stage they are not exactly entertaining. But grandma sure loves them...

| * Go to Target * Inform Chauffeur that there is no reason for concern, you are not in labor * Eat greasy mexican food * Get your hair dyed * Load the dishwasher * Chat with students who drop by * Watch an 'Intriguing Crime Drama' on TV * Vehemently DENY that you are in labor * Watch another episode of an 'Intriguing Crime Drama' on TV * Call friends and family to find someone willing to corroborate your story that you are NOT in labor
Whatever you do, do not do this: * Visit multiple websites to find one that will corroborate your story the you are NOT in labor * Allow your friend to watch the clock while you are experiencing typical, preggo "Cramping" * Watch your dvd childbirth classes "just to be sure"
(I realize many are not interested in this next part but I do have some family and friends that are- to you I apologize, read no further! For some it might be considered TMI- you've been warned!)
Monday I went in for my 39 week checkup and was told that as a first timer, I would probably deliver late. This was fine with me, I wanted the week I had plus any extra days on top of that. I came home and assured Winston and my parents that there would be no baby this week. Wednesday came, along with regular pregnancy aches, pains, and cramps. Sara came by to take me to Target, and as the evening progressed, my "typical preggo cramps" started looking like contractions. As Sara would discover me in an empty aisle, leaning on the cart breathing through the pains, I would reassure her that it was not contractions- it was too early and I still had a week. Next we did what any 39 week preggo would do, we went and ate at Tito's Tacos, a popular LA cheapo hotspot. After arriving home, Sara dyed my hair, we visited with students, and watched a tv show. While trying to prove that I was not in labor, I did the exact opposite, and around midnight had to leave my land of delusion and admit: I WAS IN LABOR. I told Winston that I would not go to the hospital in the middle of the night unless my water broke. Since I had a checkup that assured me I was not progressing just two days prior, I would wait until 7am and call my doctor's office and get their opinion. I was bound and determined not to be that woman that shows up at the hospital only to be sent home. Winston fell asleep while I was watching our Childbirth classes for a second time. It did get me focused and able to breathe better, its amazing what you forget when you need it the most! I continued through the night, waiting for the 'five minutes apart for an entire hour' as my childbirth instructor had taught. This would be the cue to go to the hospital. By 7am however, they were not that exact. But they were anywhere from 3-8 minutes apart, so when I called my doctor, they said GO! So we left around 8am. On the way I broke down, scared that they would send me home with 'false labor' and I was quite sure that if this was false labor then I couldn't handle real labor. We arrive at the hospital and I prepare to be checked. (Dilation:1-10; 1 meaning being sent home, 10 meaning ready to go) I thought I would be around 2-3, which in some circumstances would be sent home. I planned on getting an epidural, but I wanted to be at least a 5 or 6 before I recieved one, so this was going to be my wake-up call as far as my pain tolerance level. My nurse checked, and had a 'look' on her face. She said "Well... I think I'm going to get another nurse to check." I thought my worst nightmare was coming true. I guess she saw my panic and said, "You're surprising me, in a good way. I think you might be a five." She left to get another nurse to verify, and I was excitedly yelling at Winston (who was about five feet from me), "Did you hear that? I made it to five!!!" My nurse comes back in, and admits that she kind of fibbed to me, that she actually thinks that I'm a seven, but wanted a second opinion. So the second nurse verifies, I'm a seven! At that point, we just needed the doctor to break the water and delivery would follow quickly. By 2pm I was a ten, and still waiting. Unfortunately, the doctor did not come until after 4pm. Fortunately, I had the epidural as soon as they were able to give it to me, so my day was spent chatting with friends, making phone calls, and napping. After the doc came and broke my water, I pushed for an hour and ten minutes. It was actually a very wonderful hour of my life! I enjoyed seeing our little girl enter the world, and thanks to the epidural it wasn't too painful! Kaiya Ly was born at 6:35 pm. She is healthy, happy, and at least a pound heavier than expected! She is adorable, and quite a joy!

Yes, you are viewing a very pregnant me in a shopping cart. I was 31 weeks at this point. We were going out to eat after service, and were walking a few blocks to the restaurant. There happened to be a shopping cart outside of our building, so I thought "Why not?" Jessica chauffeured me right down the sidewalk in front of the W, a very exclusive hotel that caters to the very rich and famous. So while our neighbors opt for Lamborginis and Ferrraris, we chose the Albertson's special edition, complete with cupholder! (the sign in front of the hotel says "Shhh! What will our neighbors think?" I'm pretty sure they thought we were drunk!) | | |
| We are officially in the swing of things. For a midwest gal, it seems like it should be the first of September! We've completed our big promotional activities: a Taco Fiasco giving away over 800 tacos and chips and salsa, a cookout with volleyball/croquet/bocce/soccer, coffee/hot chocolate giveaway. We've had two services, with several students accepting Christ as Savior! New freshmen are getting involved, student leaders stepping up, and interns are adjusting to LA life quickly. Everything has went smoothly and successful.
The weather is shifting to be a little cooler, which is nice. We had rain, REAL rain, last night! If it hadn't been so chilly I would have slept with the windows open. The only thing I don't like, are the sinus issues that come along with the weather!
I'm gaining weight slowly but surely. (No fears of a 17 pound baby here!) We are currently looking at names. The only 'family' names I ever wanted to use were Emma and Avery, which are topping out most of the girl name charts right now. (I wanted Avery for a boy however) Most of the vietnamese name sites have very few girl names, I know there has to be more than what I've seen. Since we're not located in a VN populated area, I don't really have anywhere to listen for names. I'm sure we'll find the perfect name eventually!
I knew this would eventually happen, it just took about three weeks longer than I expected:
